TV series.
17 episodes so far, ongoing.
Approximately 22 minutes each.
I had seen the original Tron movie back in the day and remembered liking it, so I watched it again when Tron: Legacy came out and it did not age well. It was terrible. Current technology brought the concept of taking place inside a computer a huge step further with Tron: Legacy. The story and characters were average but what I loved was the visuals; the sets, costumes, vehicles and special effects. It was a feast for the eyes.
Tron: Uprising is a feast for the eyes too. If you liked the look of Legacy a lot has been carried over to Uprising and taken further. The idea of living in an electronic world works even better as animation. Everything is so slick and clean and glowing with energy. However, while I believe the whole show is CGI, the characters have been given a very graphic, hand-drawn style and are they ever ugly. Facial features are highly exaggerated with grey skin and the lanky bodies are disproportionate. Now, they may be ugly but the faces have so much character. One look at any of them and you know what that person is going to be like. The voice actors were perfectly chosen too. The brilliant combination of faces and voices brings the characters unique personalities to life. You can tell a lot of work went into every aspect of this show and there’s nothing else like it.
The story takes place before Legacy and centers around a mechanic named Beck. Clu is in the process of taking over The Grid and sends General Tesler to occupy the city of Argon. When Beck witnesses a friend being derezzed (killed) by the soldiers he lashes out by vandalizing a statue of Clu while disguised as Tron, who everyone believes is dead. This catches the real Tron’s attention and recruits Beck for the revolution. You can expect the standard good versus evil adventure stories but we also see the consequences of those actions, how Beck’s secrets affect his friends and the citizens of Argon who are caught in the middle of the war.
A lot of people seem to hate this show simply because of the character design and I have to admit, when I watched the first episode the hand-drawn style of the characters against the glowing CGI everything else was a little jarring. Now I really like it. This is the kind of show that grows on you. Give it a chance, watch a few episodes before you make a decision on whether to follow it. Highly recommended.
